Cricket Ball Puzzle

4.6K Views

At Delhi Cricket Clubhouse, there were four kids(Kohli, Yuvraj, Pant, and Dhoni) ages 1,2,3 and 4 and have 1,2,3 and 4 cricket balls in different orders.

We know the following facts:

Kohli has more cricket balls than his age.
Dhoni is older than Yuvraj.
One child has the same number of cricket balls as his age.
Pant has fewer cricket balls than Dhoni.
A child aged 3 has two cricket-balls.

Pant is the youngest.

Can you determine the age of the children and the number of cricket balls they have?

    Let’s analyze the given facts:

    1. Kohli has more cricket balls than his age.
    2. Dhoni is older than Yuvraj.
    3. One child has the same number of cricket balls as his age.
    4. Pant has fewer cricket balls than Dhoni.
    5. A child aged 3 has two cricket-balls.
    6. Pant is the youngest.

    Given these facts:

    • Fact 3 implies that one child is 1 year old and has 1 cricket ball.
    • Fact 5 implies that another child, who is aged 3, has 2 cricket balls.
    • Fact 6 tells us that the child with the fewest cricket balls (Pant) must be the youngest, so Pant is 1 year old.

Now, let’s review the remaining facts:

    • Kohli has more cricket balls than his age. Since Kohli cannot be 1 year old (Pant is 1 year old), he must be 2 years old. And since he has more than 2 cricket balls, he must have 4 cricket balls.
    • Dhoni is older than Yuvraj. If Dhoni is 4 years old, Yuvraj must be 3 years old.

So, the ages of the children and the number of cricket balls they have are:

    • Kohli (Age: 2) – Cricket balls: 4
    • Yuvraj (Age: 3) – Cricket balls: 2
    • Pant (Age: 1) – Cricket balls: 1
    • Dhoni (Age: 4) – Cricket balls: 4

    Pant age 1 ball 1
    Kohli age 2
    Yuvraj age 3 ball2
    Dhoni age 4
It is not given only one child has as many balls as his age so dhoni could could have 3 and Kohli 4 or vice versa

If more than one child had as many balls as his age, the puzzle should (could?) have stated ‘at least one child has the same number of cricket balls as his age’, which is not the case.

In that case, it doesn’t fit to be a puzzle. It should be possible to deduce the answer from the given facts and figures.

No many puzzles have more than solutions

May be, but then the “correct” answer to this ‘puzzle’ should be just the word “Yes” (or “No”), because the question is ” Can you determine” (the ages of the kids and No. of balls)! It does NOT ask you ‘to determine’ the numbers. When someone asks you “can you [do something]”, the answer can only be Yes / No. If you can “arbitrarily” assume that you have to actually determine the numbers, then we can similarly “assume” that the question implies only one kid has as many balls as his age. 🙂

Take it I explained why there is not an single answer only possible

There can be any number of answers, but no “correct” answer except Yes / No.
