Haretown and Tortoiseville are 55 miles apart. A hare travels at 8 miles per hour from Haretown to Tortoiseville, while a tortoise travels at 3 miles per hour from Tortoiseville to Haretown.

If both set out at the same time, how many miles will the hare have to travel before meeting the tortoise en route?

    Answer – 40 miles

    Distance travelled by hare = x
    Distance travelled by tortoise  = y

    x + y = 55 ………(1)

    Time taken by hare to cover distance x = x/8
    Time taken by tortoise to cover distance y = y/3

    x/8 = y/3
    3x= 8y …………..(2)

    Solving (1) and (2), x = 40, y = 15

    Hare travels 40 miles and tortoise travels 15 miles. They meet after 5 hours.
