82.2K Views

There are three gallons X, Y & Z.

Gallon X having a capacity of eight litres is filled with 5 litres of liquid.
Gallon Y has a capacity of five litres and is filled with 3 litres of liquid.
Gallon Z having a capacity of three litres is filled with 2 litres of liquid.

How can you measure 1 litre of liquid in a minimum number of steps?

Get a measuring cup that can measure one litre or any container (cup / bottle etc.) having capacity of 1 litre, and take the required quantity of liquid from any of the gallons!  🙂

I mean to say that the question is faulty / does not make sense because it lacks the crucial clause that no additional containers / measuring devices can be used.

    With the added clause:

    1. Fill Z (3-litre) from X. Now, Z contains 3 Litres and X has 4 Litres.
    2. Fill Y from Z. Since Y has capacity of 5 Litres and is already having 3, it can take only 2 more, thus leaving 1 Litre in Z.
