Tricky Interview Puzzle

92.7K Views

A simple logical interview question was asked to Rahul by the interviewee:
There is exactly one week between Christmas and New Year. Thus a New Year that occurs right after Christmas, happens to occur on the same day as Christmas. But in 2030, Christmas will occur on Wednesday and New Year will occur on Tuesday.

How is that possible?

Rahul was able to answer the question. Can you?

Not just 2030, but EVERY YEAR except a leap year, New Year day would be on the day of week that immediately precedes the day on which Christmas falls. e.g. in 2025, New Year will be on Wednesday and Christmas on Thursday.  In leap years, there will be a gap of two days. e.g. in 2024 (this year), New Year was on Monday whereas Christmas is on Wednesday. The ‘one week between Christmas and New Year’ applies to consecutive years. e.g. Christmas day of 2024 is on Wednesday and subsequent New Year day (2025) is also on Wednesday.
