A magician has four playing cards in random order in his hand ( 3 4 5 and 6)
Magician wishes them placed in ascending order from his left to his right.
– To do this, he pulls the leftmost card (from viewer perspective) and puts it end.
– He then takes the third card from the right (from viewer perspective) and puts it in end.

What is the original order of the cards from magician perspective?

Let the original order from viewer’s perspective be XZWY where W, X, Y and Z are the cards 3, 4, 5 and 6, NOT necessarily in that order. (Viewer’s perspective is considered because all movements are given in that perspective.)

Move 1: Left-most card moved to end => Result: ZWYX.
Move 2: Third from right (W) to the end => Result: ZYXW.

Since the final arrangement is ascending left to right from magician’s perspective, this must be descending order in viewer’s perspective. Replacing the letters with numbers as per the resulting arrangement, we get ZYXW is equivalent to 6543.  Hence, the original arrangement in viewer’s perspective XZWY = 4635, which, in turn, means that the original order from the magician’s perspective was 5364.
