Petrol leakage riddle

992.7K Views

I traveled from London to Glasgow last week at 60 miles per hour, I had filled my petrol tank just before I left, so it was full with 25 gallons.

Unfortunately, my petrol tank sprang a leak immediately and I only managed to drive 300 miles before I ran out of petrol.

My car does 30 miles per gallon, how fast was I losing petrol through the hole?

You need to plug the leak urgently.

You had filled 25 gallons but could use only 10, which let you reach just 300 miles in 5 hours, at 60 miles per hour. That means you lost 15 gallons in those 5 hours or 3 gallons per hour. Put differently, you lost 60% of your money you spent on petrol over those five hours. At around £1.2 per litre, that’s £18 that went down the drain in 5 hours or £3.6 per hour as against £2.4 you could utilize per hour.

After 300 miles, at 30 miles/gal, 10 gallons were consumed by the engine.
    The other 15 gallons leaked,
And since he drove for 5 hours (300 mi at 60 mph), the gas leaked at the rate of 3 gal/hour.
