Rope way riddle

1,018.0K Views

You are standing on the top one of the two solid metal pillars. They are both exactly one hundred meter apart from each other and they both stand one hundred meter high. There is absolutely nothing around these pillars, but you have one small twig, one small rock and an unlimited supply of rope. Using only the materials named, how can you get from the top of the pillar that you are on to the top of the other pillar?

An “unlimited” supply of anything is a tricky prospect when it comes to puzzles. You can have ‘unlimited’ possibilities…

Coming to the question at hand, I will use the rope to make a huge pile on the floor such that the ‘rope cone’ eventually reaches close the top of the pillar. (Since I have “unlimited” supply of rope. it won’t be difficult!) Now I can simply jump on to the top of the heap and then climb down. Once I am on the ground, I can take the rope closer to the other pillar and start winding it around the pillar so that the rope-winding forms a sort of ‘ladder’ which I can climb little by little till I reach the top.

So here I’m, on my target, without even using my other ‘tools’, namely, the twig and the rock…! Hail the “unlimited supply”…!! 🙂

And, thinking retrospectively, I feel I could have made the ‘cone’ I used to climb down from the first pillar by winding the rope around the pillar itself instead of making a heap on the ground nearby.
