The Man in the Elevator
A man lives on the tenth floor of a building. Every day he takes the elevator to go down to the ground floor to go to work or to go shopping. When he returns he takes the elevator to the seventh floor and walks up the stairs to reach his apartment on the tenth floor. On a rainy day, or if there are other people in the elevator, he goes to his floor directly. He hates walking so why does he do it?
This is probably the best known and most celebrated of all lateral thinking puzzles. It is a true classic. Although there are many possible solutions which fit the initial conditions, only the canonical answer is truly satisfying.
The man is (of course) a dwarf. Variants of this puzzle include the clue that on rainy days he goes up in the elevator to the tenth floor (he uses his umbrella!)
if he is a dwarf..how could he goes to the 7th floor in an elevator
Apparently, he can reach only up to the 7th floor button; the ones for floors 8-10 are too high.
Swtiches for floor – 8,9,10 – in the elevator is broken.
If there are other people in the elevator, he goes to his floor directly.
This means Switches are working properly.
If he hates walking and assuming he is a dwarf than why didn’t he carry his umbrella or a stick every day when he goes to work?
Canonical answer to this problem would be that the man is a Dwarf. We can conclude this because on rainy day he had Umbrella and when other people are in elevator then they will help him. Other days he has none.
If he is Dwarf then how he come down to ground floor daily by use of elevator?
Because the switch for ground floor is lowest of all. So, the dwarf can easily reach for that switch.
I think elevator dont have switches for 8,9 and 10 So when returning he goes upto 7th floor only .On rainy day or when people are inside he use stairs
Guys..the answer is very simple
The person is a dwarf!! Simply have a look at the above img..his hands can only reach till the 7th button and not above that.
On the day it rains, he’l have his umbrella to help him out to reach the 10th floor button.
When there are ppl inside, they’ll press the 10th floor button for me 😛 😀
He is too short to reach the “10” button.
But when others are with him, he can ask them to push the button for the 10th floor.
And on a rainy day he has an umbrella, so he can push the button using that.
