    Yes, Ronald kept his promise!!

The former (now dead) President had told Ronald not to sell the gift unless Ronald sees the president again..
But saying this the president(now dead) didn’t mean that Ronald had to meet him(the dead president). In fact ,
Ronald could meet only an US president later ,and then could sell his gift.

The buyer was a new president of US.
Ronald meet him on the day when he sold the gift to the buyer(the president himself)!!!

The former (now dead) President had told him not to sell it unless he sees the president again“. He didn’t say “never sell it unless you meet the president again”. Ronald might have seen the President ‘n’ number of times (later) before his death.

Reading it in a different way:

The former President X had told him not to “sell it unless he sees the president again“. He didn’t say “never sell it unless you see ‘me’ again”. So, even though Ronald couldn’t meet President X again before his death, he could have sold it once he got an opportunity to meet (any) President Y who assumed Office subsequently, before selling it.

Either way, Mr. Ronald had sold it without breaking his promise.
